Build your all-time MLB roster across any era
The 162-0 Challenge is a free MLB draft simulation game where you build an all-time baseball lineup by selecting players from random team and decade combinations spanning the entire history of Major League Baseball. Your goal: assemble a roster capable of going undefeated through a full 162-game regular season — something no team in baseball history has ever done.
The best single-season record in MLB history belongs to the 2001 Seattle Mariners, who tied the 1906 Chicago Cubs record with 116 wins — still falling 46 short of a perfect season. Going 162-0 is one of the most unreachable records in all of professional sports. Building the theoretical roster that could do it is the entire point.
Your lineup has nine slots to fill covering all major positions: Catcher, First Base, Second Base, Third Base, Shortstop, Left Field, Center Field, Right Field, and Starting Pitcher, plus relief pitcher slots. Each round spins a random MLB franchise and a random decade — you might land on the 1950s New York Yankees, the 1970s Cincinnati Reds, the 1990s San Francisco Giants, or the 2010s Houston Astros. Pick the best available player from that combination for your open position.
You get one free re-spin per round — re-spin either the team or the decade. If you land on a team without strong options at your remaining positions, use the re-spin to try a different combination. Once your lineup is complete, the simulation runs your full 162-game schedule.
The simulation evaluates your roster using offensive production (batting average, on-base percentage, home runs, RBIs, stolen bases), pitching quality (ERA, WHIP, strikeouts, wins), roster balance across all nine positions, and All-Star selections which boost a player's value in the engine. A lineup featuring elite hitters at every position with a dominant starting rotation can push win probability above 80% per game — but baseball's natural variance means even the best lineups lose regularly.
Over 162 games, small differences in win probability compound dramatically. A team with 80% win probability per game is expected to win about 130 games — elite by historical standards, but still 32 wins short of perfect. A roster that reaches 85% per game gets you to roughly 138 wins. True 162-0 territory requires a theoretical roster that doesn't exist in real baseball history.
The player database spans MLB from the 1950s through the 2020s, organized by franchise and decade. Position player stats include batting average, OBP, home runs, RBI, and stolen bases. Pitcher stats include ERA, WHIP, wins, strikeouts, and saves. Notable players include legends at every position: Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams, Stan Musial, Roberto Clemente, Johnny Bench, Mike Schmidt, Pete Rose, Rickey Henderson, Barry Bonds, Ken Griffey Jr., Derek Jeter, Albert Pujols, Mike Trout, Shohei Ohtani, and hundreds more across all eras.
Pitching legends in the database include Sandy Koufax, Bob Gibson, Tom Seaver, Nolan Ryan, Roger Clemens, Greg Maddux, Randy Johnson, Pedro Martínez, Clayton Kershaw, Max Scherzer, and others. All-Star selection counts are tracked and factored into each player's simulation value.
The 162-0 Challenge offers three modes: All-Time Draft (spin any team and any decade from all of baseball history), Single Franchise Challenge (draft exclusively from one franchise across all decades — build the all-time Yankees, Dodgers, or Cardinals roster), and Era Draft (choose a specific decade and build the best possible lineup from that era only). Each mode offers a different strategic challenge.
Every completed season submits your result to the global leaderboard, powered by Firebase. No account required — set a display name and compete for daily, weekly, monthly, and all-time rankings against players worldwide. The 162-0 Challenge is the hardest of the three sports simulations to perfect, making a complete undefeated season the rarest and most valuable score on the leaderboard.
